Kitchen consumables

Bin liners
Don’t be tempted by biodegradable plastic unless it specifies it is compostable, otherwise it is just plastic that has added chemicals to make it degrade more quickly.

These look like good alternatives.

Or go for a paper option

Clothes wash
I’ve used Ecover washing powder packaged in a cardboard box, plus a spoonful of bicarbonate of soda as fabric softener. It cleans everything well enough.

If you want to avoid stains, wear aprons and overalls.

Also you will be needing pegs to hang things up

Dish washer tablets
I don’t have a dishwasher but Dawn recommends using Ecozone and Ecoleaf soluble dish washer tablets.

Rubber gloves

Surface cleaners

This company sells all you need for DIY cleaning and has helpful tips and recipes.

Alternatively you can order in bulk from Ecover direct and they will send you 15 lt of cleaner in a bag in a box (which are not brilliantly designed I have to say)  which you can then decant into a bottle of your choice. I have just bought this and you should be able to recycle all the packaging. I shall wait to see if this it true when it comes to it.

Washing up brushes and scrubbers
I am in correspondence with www.ecofriendlyshop.co.uk  who are currently updating their website but it should be the go to place for all those coconut based scrubbers and scrapers as well as wooden dish brushes with replaceable heads.

Washing up liquid
As with surface cleaner I now buy Ecover washing up liquid in bulk in a bag in a box and decant it into an old glass bottle.

Equipment and Kit

Bins
These look like a lovely selection of colourful all metal bins, but I can’t vouch for their packaging. Best check direct with them.

Brushes and pans
This seems to be one of the more reasonably priced outlets for such items if you are not lucky enough to have a local hardware shop that sells such things. But again phone them up to check for packaging.

Chopping boards
These are good things to buy as gifts and it is most likely you will find some in a local hand-made craft fair, but if not, these look good.

Food containers
If you want to buy new, these look good or go rummaging in charity/ vintage shops for nice old tins
www.asliceofgreen.co.uk/reusable-containers/?features_hash=10-125

Food wrap
If you need to do this then the beeswax wraps get high praise from many and you can buy them from Jenny at
www.anythingbutplastic.co.uk/product-page/beeswax-wraps

and SAS say that they will be stocking them soon.

Rachel has sent in a DIY recipe and once I have tried it out I shall share it here.

Frying pans
Solid iron frying pans are great but re too heavy for me so I prefer this

Kettles
There are many great stove top kettles out there and here are 3 that I liked the look of but it is best to go proper shopping and check them out to be sure.

Copper

Colourful

Stainless Steel

Ice cube trays
You used to be able to buy metal ice cube trays but I did not find any. Alternatively silicone ones seem a good alternative and let us hope silicone remains a benign material.

Washing -up bowls
A stainless bowl will last forever or you can sometimes find vintage enamel ones but they will eventually rust and disintegrate.

Also look out for giant stainless dog bowls as they are likely to be half the price, but could be just what you need.
